This is one open call that seems like it would be really fun! Normally, the honorarium award style doesn't fly for me, but I suppose it's not much different than a juried show. Also, the whole show promises to be so exuberant. I like how Bhangra is mixed and matched with all kinds of different fusion styles now. ( Call for Art Work: 2010 Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration )Would anyone be interested in a group collaboration?

Thanks to Lena ( czmadzia), from back when I wrote Ai no Kusabi fic, I get to recommend an original and engaging NC17 yaoi novel in progress, Captive Prince now standing at 17 chapters. ( Fast-paced Story is fast-paced )

Yesterday, I posted the Prohibition-era backstory to the Filumena Redux doujinshi for the 7thnight_smut Saiyuki AU gift exchange community. Here's a story about trying to come up with the images which comprised the "Burial" section of my tale. It brushes a bit on the history of the Crowsnest Consolidated Mining Co., but I will have to put the history and legends about Bill Fernie off until tomorrow. ( On authenticity in storylines. )
|
The 7thnight_smut postings go up tonight. This is the big annual Saiyuki "Alternate Universe" gift exchange based on the 7th Night Festival. There are always a wide variety of pairings and threesomes, and although it is mainly slash, the odd het piece as well. They can range from short 2500-word pieces to sprawling 12-chapter epics. "Twelve chapters of Saiyuki!" you say. "That's almost longer than the series." Styles can range from steampunk to death!fic to hilarious crack depending on your mood. They are all rated for adult readers only. Since these giftfic exchanges comprise the bulk of my writing at this time, I encourage people who like my stories (or like Saiyuki stories in general) to join the comm and read them. The joining restriction is primarily to create a gateway to discourage minors and trolls. It's worth it. I've been taken aback by the quality of the stories people have written for my prompts.

Salon says there's an ero-lit rag in Britain whose publisher, despite being a woman, says that she won't publish stories written by women because she thinks that women are terrible erotic writers, ie., too emotional, not mechanically focused enough. ROFL. Apart from agreeing, as a woman, that I would much rather write and read about emotionally based sex than the 'put tab A into slot B' sex, and disagree that this makes for terrible writing, who buys erotic literature magazines anymore?

I've always assumed that most of the people who take the trouble to respond to my stories are generally pretty straightforward. As long as a criticism is worded respectfully and intended as an offer of concrit or even just a statement of where the person is coming from, I tend not to have issues with it. I get pretty shirty about remarks that are just about being rude, though, and maybe that intimidates honest, heartfelt criticism. Perhaps there's something else you've wanted to tell me, and for whatever reason, you feel that it's better to say it anonymously. Here's your chance: THE ANONYMOUS WRITING FEEDBACK MEME

stalkerbunny has hand-drawn and hand-painted with gouache and watercolours a magnificent illustration to one of my fics. For those of you who haven't yet been introduced to stalkerbunny's work, the handmade work is her specialty. She doesn't rely the luxury of photoshop or illustrator or Paint(tm) to tweak parts of her pictures later. So her work depends on making the right stroke of the pen/pencil and applying the right wash of paint. As a result, the pictures are full of vigour! I think you will be as impressed as I am with just how right she gets it! She is not afraid of colour, not afraid of black, not afraid of details. There is always a lovely balance of activity and restfulness in each of her creations. Please go and take a look.

I'm 7veils at dreamwidth if anyone is interested in friending me there. The freedom from advertisements impressed me very much, feeling as I do about the value of content. I have invested in a paid account, although I'm not sure how I will use it at this stage.

Hello! I wanted to mention some pieces by a fanfic writer who incorporates lovingly detailed and well-researched craftsmanship into the overall themes of her stories, not to mention that they are just fun to read. Presently, I'm admiring her Saiyuki/Bleach x-over, Tenpou's Tea, but she also writes a mean (in the best possible sense of the word) Samurai Champloo [Jin/Mugen] in Combined Edge Strange Edge. Please go and read them, if you haven't already. You won't regret it!

The trailers for HBP look really exciting. Very dark, but complicated and interesting.

When I look out my window and see a meter of crusted snow, and when we had sleet just yesterday, it's hard to believe that the northern hemisphere approaches another vernal equinox. Even if people in my region get sunshine from now until mid-April, the spring flowers--crocuses, hyacinths, narcissus, daffodils and early tulips--won't be up for 2-3 weeks yet. Blossoms won't come until the end of next month. Even so, I wish everyone in the northern hemisphere a happy, warm and blossom-filled spring.

In the comments section for Masque over on valentine_smut, stalkerbunny provoked a long explanation from me about the different types of masks worn during the Venetian Carnivale.

Carnivale is tied in with the Twelfth Night Feast of Fools [Epiphany] celebrations in northern Europe, Mardi Gras in Roman Catholic countries, hosts of Roman and pre-Roman pagan festivals, and which kind of morphed into the sanitized Valentines Day (greeting-card co.) celebration during the (outwardly) uptight Victorian era. It was so satisfying to let out all that esoterica in one big dump that I decided to do the same thing here.
So for those who wondered about the differences between a volto and a bauta mask, here's the (long) version:
( My long explanation involving Carnivale, Mardi Gras and Venetian Masks. )
( Examples of Venetian Masks. )

BADGER IN A BAG
Pairing: Implied Fuji/Tezuka.
Rating: Gen

According to Konomi, Fuji likes Celtic music, which led away from modern pop music to Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon" which, in turn, led to this story:
The Celtic myth to which Fuji and Atobe refer is roughly recounted here (link). It kind of wandered away from the prompt, Junn, but it did so on its own accord. I hope you like it anyway!

The writers grab stories from the news, Vancouver Airport's taser death in this last episode, and stitch them up with fragments of others into these fantastic chimerae, taut with suspense.
An autopsy hones in on the activities of charitable organizations to nation-build-restore, and the devil's pacts they strike up with mercenary groups, who seem to get off scot-free---lots of gray areas where the rule of law, the necessary and just rule of law, directly counterpunches the moral integrity and realities of survival within a frontier environment. Canadian Dr. Evil also re-emerges in the character of ex-CSIS agent Mannering, promising future dastardly deeds.
Such a good show.
ETA: And my LJ comment notification is on the fritz. Lots of people have been complaining about the same problem. If anyone can shed some light on this for me, please do. It seems that LJ's new servers don't have the juice.

I just want to flag some of my f-list out there who are trying really hard to master English, especially you brave souls who are tackling it as your second language! (Full of admiration for you.) The marvelous whymzycal, who teaches this stuff for a living, has very kindly offered to coach people on the nuts and bolts of American English. She is a better resource person than me, because Canadian English swims between British and American, and refuses to commit to either shore. Also, she approaches it from the POV of a teacher---an English composition teacher---which is not my skill. I have habits from longstanding practice and critical reading. It's quite a different (and amazing) matter to actually be able to explain this stuff simply and clearly, knowing how the process of learning works. So, head on over to whymzycal's LJ, and post your trickiest sentences and paragraphs, and let her work her magic on you!

CBC's "The Border" continues to astound with its combination of terrific and topical suspense and jaw-dropping awful sex. This time Agent Gray creases the sheets with Liz Carver, a US agent whose big line is: "Let's get this over with. I can't afford any more distractions."
Um, is that supposed to pass for foreplay?
